It has been our experience that Cymbopogon citratus has performed well in our area. We have observed that these start slow when added to the garden as a plug and begin growing more full in the heat of the summer with regular watering. It has very fragrant, lemon-scented foliage.
It can be left to overwinter as a dry grass to maintain interest in the winter garden, but the foliage will be gray. This does not reliably come back the next spring, though chances are possible in milder winters.
